]]>In the previous post we talked about how South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore have relied on data to contain coronavirus infection, with encouraging results.
Wired reveals in an article that a team of experts is ready to work with the Italian government to exploit big data and technologies and already has a dossier to study: an analysis developed on a set of data provided by Facebook throughout the university of Pavia.
It was the World Health Organization (WHO) itself that called the governments: the closure of businesses, schools and companies, the so-called blockade, alone is not enough. “We have not seen a significant increase in the urgency of testing, isolation and contact tracking, which is the backbone of the response to Covid-19,” said the authority’s director-general, Tedros Adhamon Ghebreyesus.
In recent days, even the largest Italian telephone companies have offered, through their trade association, Asstel, anonymous data sets that aggregate the movements of their users to do contact tracking, or trace all the contacts of an infected person. The article also analyzes the #privacy issue

]]>Despite not having a pervasive video surveillance system like the Chinese one, South Korea uses a smartphone app that intercepts the GPS signal to check compliance with the obligations to stay at home. When the application detects that the user has left a predefined area, an alert is automatically sent to the government officer assigned to each citizen. South Korea in a few days has drastically reversed the trend of infections: after a peak of 900 new cases of COVID-19 recorded on February 29, the number has halved in two days and has steadily decreased to the point of falling under 150 new cases daily from 11 March.
Let’s talk about technological scenarios, leaving aside for a moment the question of respect for personal freedom.
